Participation

First stage will take place from September 18 to October 25, 2019. The international groups, which enrol in the Competition Modality, compete by sending a video with the whole performance recorded.

The Grand Final

The Grand Final takes place in February of the immediate following year. During this time the finalist groups of each category present their work, in the Theatres at Centro Cultural Universitario, in front of a new jury who will select the winner play for each category and announce them during the Closure Ceremony. The winning productions receive a cash price and the opportunity to present their work once more in one of UNAM’s professional theatres.

Performance Season

The awarded plays will present their work once more in one of UNAM’s professional theatres. and get a cash price of MX$20,000.00

27th INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY THEATRE FESTIVAL



The International Festival of University Theater aims to promote, encourage and disseminate the Theater generated by students. Its structure allows coexistence among students, teachers, creators, researchers and general public, within an environment that promotes university principles and values.

The FITU is a contest that has developed a platform where the participants engage in a free dialogue, promoting the creation of bonds between different agents of theatrical life for the construction of a voice that represents the theatrical community.


CALL 2019-2020


CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

Student groups currently enrolled in high school or in an undergraduate program with or without a focus in theatre, artistic initiation schools, and graduates from professional theatre schools in Mexico; and groups of students who are currently enrolled in professional theatre schools as well as recent graduates from professional schools of theatre (maximum of three years) from international schools are welcome to participate.

“A” High school level
“B” Degree level (without theatre speciality)
“C” Professional theatre schools in the following subcategories:
“C1” Student’s staging directed by students
“C2” Student’s staging directed by teachers*
“C3” Staging by graduates (director & actors with a maximum of three years from having concluded their studies)
“C4” Plays for kids and young audiences

INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPATION

“C” Professional theatre schools in the following subcategories:
“C1” Student’s staging directed by students
“C2” Student’s staging directed by teachers*
“C3” Staging by graduates (director & actors with a maximum of three years from having concluded their studies)
“C4” Plays for kids and young audiences


* Category C2 includes plays that are made to obtain a degree, intermediate jobs and advised by teachers because those are jobs that arise from academic programs or subjects created by schools. In any case, it must be informed to the Advisory Council for the evaluation purposes and competence. The omission of information may cause penalties.


DEVELOPMENT OF THE FESTIVAL

The Festival will be held in four stages:

Registration Stage will take place from August 5th to 25th. Those interested should verify, in the registration section of this call, the registration dates according to the participation category.

Selection Stage will take place from September 18th to October 25th, 2019, in which the selection of the national participation groups will be in person and that of the international participation groups, will be held done through a video.

The results, both of the national finalists and of the selection of international groups, will be published on the website UNAM Theater between November 1st and 4th, 2019.

The groups selected as finalists will receive an informative email detailing the conditions of participation during the Grand Final.

Grand Final will be held from February 8th to 16th, 2020 at the University Cultural Center, a period in which a new jury, composed of 3 renowned personalities in the theatrical medium will attend the finalist works to select the winning work of each category.

Special Cycle of Winners, a Circuit will be held between March and June 2020, at Santa Catarina Theater of the UNAM, the National School of Theater Arts of the INBAL, the University Theater Center of the UNAM and the College of Dramatic Literature and Theater of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the UNAM, in which the 6 Winners will participate.


GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Applicants must submit the required registration form, as well as the application of staging in the form of theatre room, alternative spaces or street theater (free theme) with a minimum duration of 50 minutes and a maximum of 3 hours.

2. The group that is applying must manage the necessary copyright for its presentation (if applicable) and submit a letter of authorization from the author in favor of one of the members of the group.

3. The Theater Directorate UNAM disclaims any conflict relating to copyright, so any project that is involved in a problem of this nature, the application will be unsubscribed and may not continue to participate.

4. The members of the groups must be associated with an educational institution, public or private, of any state of the Mexican Republic and the Metropolitan Area; and of any educational institution with a specialty in theater, public or private of any country.

5. For the application, the group must show their accreditation to the institution through a letterhead letter.

6. Applicants of Category C3 must present the necessary accreditations to check their year of graduation.


REQUIREMENTS AND CONDITIONS

National Participation

7. For the Selection Stage, the Festival organization will set the schedules, dates, and spaces in which the staging of the participating groups of the CDMX and the Metropolitan Area will be presented.

8.  The programming for these groups will be based on the needs included in the registration forms and in the location area of ​​the school closest to the venues.

9. Participants will receive a commitment letter detailing the conditions mentioned in the above numerals, which must be signed by the group representative and sent to the Festival organization in a timely manner.

10. In case the participant staging is set up in its own venue, it must be specified in the Registration Form. Also, in this case, the organization of the Festival will schedule the presentation date.

11. There will be no modifications to the programming and the groups must adapt to the conditions provided by the organization.

12.  In case the group declines its participation, it must notify the Festival organization two weeks before the date assigned for its presentation.

13. The group of each participating work (actors and creative team) must be composed of regular students registed or recent graduates (maximum 3 years of graduates), according to the category and the following exceptions will be allowed:

For Categories A, B, C1, and C4 a maximum of two external parties per group (one actor and one creative) will be allowed.

For Category C2, only one external actor per group will be allowed. The creative team is exempt from this requirement.
In the case of category C3, 80% of the group must be recent graduates (maximum three years) of Theater Schools or have a maximum of two external elements (one actor and one creative).

The groups will provide a letterhead issued by their educational institution, in which the names of the participants are listed with their respective registration or account numbers, as well as the specification of the semester they are studying or year of graduation.

In case the group is composed of members of several Educational Institutions, the accreditations of each School will be provided so that they are not considered external elements.

14. Projects that have benefited from the Theatrical Groups Incubator Program to support the production of their projects during the last three editions, may participate with that same work within the Festival in Category C2.

15. The participating groups, in collaboration with their respective schools, will be responsible for the transportation of actors and production for the functions of the Selection Stage and the Grand Final (if selected).

16.  In the Selection Stage, the participating groups of the states will have to manage the venue space for the presentation in the period established for this Stage.

17. The groups and the schools that represent the federative entities will finance the transfer of two juries to their states.

18. The Direction of Theater UNAM will assume the fees, lodging, and food of the two juries that will assist the entities in the Selection Stage.

19. In the event that a group of a federative entity is selected to participate in the Grand Final, it must cover the expenses related to the transfer to the CDMX of the equipment and production, as well as its lodging and food.

20. If they are winners during the Grand Final, they will apply the previous criteria.

21. The postulation of productions that have participated in previous editions of the Festival will not be accepted.


International Participation

22. Interested groups should send the following to the Festival organization:

• Technical sheet of the staging
• Letterhead certificate, issued by your educational institution, in which the names of the participants are listed with their respective registration or account numbers.
• Registration form required.
• Text of the work.
• Video of the staging in HD quality (Youtube / Vimeo). In case the work is not performed in Spanish or English, it is required that the video be subtitled in Spanish to be evaluated by the Jury of the category in which it participates.

23. If selected in the second stage, they will participate in the Grand Final, in Mexico City and must assume the costs of moving the equipment and production, lodging and food.


24. The group of each participating work (actors and creative team) must be composed of regular students or recent graduates (maximum 3 years of graduates), according to the category and the following exceptions will be allowed:

REGISTRATION

1. This call is open as of its publication and in a staggered way the registration by category will be made in the following dates:
Categories "A" and "B" from August 5th to 11th, 2019 (National).
Category "C2" and "C4" from August 12th to 18th, 2019 (National and International).
Categories "C1" and "C3" from August 19th to August 25th, 2019 (National and International).

3. Once completed, the file must be sent in a digital file, in the times corresponding to its category, to the mail festivalteatrounam@gmail.com along with the accreditation letter (s).


4. The organization of the Festival will review the information provided in the Card and send the confirmation of pre-registration so that they proceed to make the registration payment.


5. The registration fee will be $ 500.00 (FIVE HUNDRED PESOS 00/100 M.N.).


6. All groups, along with the confirmation of your registration, will be sent the format to make your bank deposit.


7. To complete the process, you must send your payment card to the mail fitu.depositos@gmail.com and in response, you will receive confirmation of your registration, an operative regulation and a responsive letter that must be returned signed.


8. It is important to consider that the closing of registration for each category includes the complete process (download file, send requisite file, receive pre-registration mail along with deposit format, make deposit, notify deposit, receive registration mail and the rest of the documents); therefore, it is suggested not to wait until the last day, since there will be no extemporaneous requests or incomplete processes.



AWARDS


1. The jury will be composed of personalities of renowed prestige in the theatrical environment and will reward the best group of each category.

2. The jury may award recognitions/mentions in all categories in the aspects that they consider outstanding.


3. The decision of the jury will be unappealable.


4. The works selected as winners in the stage of the Grand Final will receive a Prize of $20,000.00 (TWENTY THOUSAND MEXICAN PESOS 00/100 M.N.)


5. The Award Ceremony will be held on February 16th, 2020.


6. The works selected as winners in the stage of the Grand Final, will also be programmed within a Special Cycle organized by the Festival in a circuit that will include Santa Catarina Theater of the UNAM, the National School of Theater Art of the INBAL, the University Center of Theater of the UNAM and the School of Dramatic Literature and Theater of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the UNAM.


7.  In each of the categories, there will be only one winning group.


8. The winning works that could not be presented in the dates and spaces assigned by the Festival in the Special Winning Cycle, will be considered as declined their participation in it.


EXPLANATIONS


1. Matters not specified in this call will be resolved and made known by the Advisory Council in a timely manner.

2. The registration to the Festival implies the acceptance of the conditions indicated in this call.

3. In the event that a finalist group declines its participation, the Advisory Council will decide if another work proposed by the jury of that category may compete in substitution or, the place will be declared void. For both stages, it is important to promptly notify any change in the members of the group and again cover the conditions of participation.
